Background

The world is collectively grappling with the effects of a pandemic, one that has caused much introspection about our collective treatment of the environment. In the recent past, environmental issues have escalated to the point of climate change morphing into a potential climate emergency. In light of this, immediate action and response is necessary to mitigate the impending climatic doom that all of us collectively will have to face. Currently, a disruptive relation exists between the environment and humans. It isn’t reciprocal. Terms like ‘sustainability’, ‘ethical’, and ‘green’ are commonly being used to denote the nature of businesses or actions. These terms largely indicate responsible interaction with the environment to refrain further depletion of natural resources and improve the quality of life for future generations.

According to a study conducted by the United National Global Compact Accenture Industry, 93 per cent CEOs believe that issues relating to sustainability will be critical to the future success of their business. That study also highlights the fact that sustainable institutions need to become the new reality if we are to continue living on this planet at all.

Changing the status quo with regards to our treatment of the environment and associated government policies, is one of the most urgent steps that can be taken. What better way to explore solutions to this mammoth problem than businesses tailored to help save the environment? The concept of ‘green entrepreneurship’ is one that has entered the mainstream over the past few years. As the awareness of climate change and its associated dangers are percolating to more and more industries and corporations, the need to come up with sustainable solutions is being felt by every sector. Green entrepreneurship refers to the creation of innovative entrepreneurial solutions to mitigate larger environmental and social problems and secure the future from a socio-climatic catastrophe. This type of entrepreneurship is the need of the hour if we are to have a future at all. Hence, the importance of educating masses about the scope and potentiality of green entrepreneurship cannot be stressed enough.

To conclude, as Gustav Berle said, “Green entrepreneurship is taking responsibility to create the world we dream of.”
